Earlier this month, Kirsty Freeman wrote an article on books that her and her friends have been reading this summer. As someone who enjoys movies, I decided to create a list of movies in a similar format. Over the summer, I participated in a film club and we brought together a list of 25 movies that we have enjoyed.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
American Honey
Amelie
Napoleon Dynamite
Jackie Brown
Minari
The Farewell
Waking Life *
Mistress America
Marie Antoinette
Ophelia
The Florida Project
Chungking Express *
Buffalo 66
Scanner Darkly
Waves
What We Do in the Shadows *
YiYi
Princess Monoke
Ghost in the Shell
Intouchables
Train to Busan
Reservoir Dogs
The Sound of Metal
The Handmaiden
This list of movies vary in genre from period pieces to animation and classics. The movies with stars next to them are my personal top three that I have watched this summer.
Waking Life, directed by Richard Linklater, is about a man who moves between different dreams where he meets different people while having surreal experiences. As he moves through, he is trying to find the answers to some of his biggest questions about life. What makes this movie one of my top three is its interesting concept as well as the experimental animation style. Chungking Express, directed by Wong Kar-wai, is a Hong Kong romantic crime comedy-drama that leaves a lasting impression. The cinematography and character development are the stand out qualities amongst others that makes it a movie I can watch over and over again. Lastly, What We Do in the Shadows, directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, is a mockumentary on vampires who are trying to assimilate to the modern world. It’s comical, entertaining and different from movies I have watched before.
I hope that with this list of recommendations, you can find something that you like or something you never thought to watch before. Happy watching!
