There’s no doubt that movie stars and internet personalities have a large influence on their audiences and with that, they use their following to voice their passions. This year, it’s advocating voting for the upcoming presidential election. Charities and live-streams are only some of the ways celebrities are expressing their eagerness for wanting people to participate in the election. Here are five pop culture icons who are encouraging you to get out and vote.
1.The Cast of The Rocky Horror Picture Show
This Saturday (October 31st — yes, this Halloween) the cast of the cult-classic horror/musical along with a number of special guests such as Jason Alexander, Rosario Dawson, and Seth Green are gathering for a musical livestream. It will include performances by Fall Out Boy and a variety of other artists. All of the proceeds will go to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
2. The Cast of The Princess Bride
On September 13, some of the actors from the 1987 film The Princess Bride (along with special guests like Whoopi Goldberg and Josh Gad) held a benefit event (also for WisDems). This included a virtual script reading and a Q&A with the likes of Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and more.
3. The Cast of Hamilton
On October 16, the cast of the hit musical Hamilton gathered together for a virtual Q&A run by the show’s director, Thomas Kail. All of the proceeds from the ticket sales went to support the Biden/Harris campaign.
Even earlier this October, the creator and originator of the titular role, Lin Manuel Miranda, volunteered in another way for the Biden/Harris campaign. He helped run a phone bank that was made possible in partnership with the Latino Victory Project.
4. The Cast of The West Wing
For the past few months, the cast of the hit TV series The West Wing (1999-2006) have gathered on multiple occasions to be politically active. Much of the cast was featured in a cover story for Entertainment Weekly this September, in part to announce a benefit for When We All Vote that was released on HBO Max earlier this month.
The benefit was a theatrical staging of an episode of the show and filled with short intermissions done by special guests including Michelle Obama, Bill Clinton, and Lin Manuel Miranda encouraging people to vote and providing voter registration information.
Not only that, but the show’s cast gathered together for a Virtual Trivia Night to fundraise for the Biden/Harris campaign very recently.
5. Like, Pretty Much Every Celebrity on Social Media
It’s not uncommon for celebrities on social media to speak out on behalf of the political issues that are near and dear to their hearts, so it’s not surprising that a number of individuals have made their own efforts to get out and vote.
Just check out this Buzzfeed list. It includes a list of celebrities with anyone from Samuel L. Jackson to Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. With the amount of celebrities encouraging people to vote, the article wasn’t able to record every celebrity as it would have been a never-ending list.
